The Glow Guide · Soleil Airbrush Tanning
The honest timeline, what changes it, and how to land on the ten-day end of the range.
A professional spray tan lasts 7-10 days. With good prep before your appointment and consistent aftercare, you'll hold rich, even color for about a week, then fade gradually toward day ten. Skip the prep or the moisturizer and you'll land closer to seven days, sometimes with patchier fading. Here's exactly what to expect, day by day, and the four factors that decide which end of the range you get.
A spray tan isn't a coating that sits on top of your skin. The active ingredient, DHA, reacts with the outermost layer of your skin cells to create color. Those cells naturally shed on their own schedule, and as they go, your tan goes with them. That shedding cycle is why every honest studio quotes a range instead of a magic number: your tan lives exactly as long as that top layer of skin does.
Anyone promising a two-week spray tan is either layering on so much solution it will fade unevenly, or just telling you what you want to hear. At Soleil, we'd rather you know the truth and plan around it.
DHA needs a smooth, product-free surface to develop evenly. Exfoliating 24 hours before, shaving or waxing at least 12 hours ahead, and arriving with zero lotion, deodorant, or makeup gives the solution fresh skin to bond with. Skin that's already mid-shed when you're sprayed will start fading almost immediately. Our spray tan prep checklist walks through every step.
Deeper shades hold visible color longer simply because there's more pigment developed into the skin. Our Luxe Ultra Dark clients typically see strong color through day eight or nine, while lighter, natural blends read subtle sooner. Rinse timing matters too: with our rapid rinse solution, showering at 4 hours gives a lighter result and 8 hours the deepest, and that starting depth carries through the whole fade.
Naturally dry skin sheds faster, which shortens any spray tan. Oily skin can resist the initial development slightly. Neither is a problem, it's just information your artist uses: at your consult we look at your skin and adjust the blend and our aftercare advice accordingly.
This is the factor you control most after you leave. Moisturizing twice daily with an oil-free lotion, patting dry instead of rubbing, and avoiding chlorine, hot tubs, and harsh products (exfoliants, retinol, alcohol-based anything) can genuinely add two to three days. We wrote a full guide on making your spray tan last longer, and the essentials live on our prep and aftercare page.
How a tan looks on day eight matters as much as how it looks on day one. Booth presets apply one formula at one intensity to everyone, and when they fade, they tend to go patchy, especially around hands, elbows, and knees. Every tan at Soleil is a custom-blended airbrush tan: your artist mixes your shade on the spot to match your skin tone and hand-sprays it, feathering the areas that fade fastest. The result is color that softens evenly across all 7-10 days instead of breaking up, which is exactly what our organic-based, antioxidant-rich solutions are built to do.
If you want continuous color, book every 9-10 days and exfoliate lightly the day before each session so you're starting from fresh skin, not layering over old color. For a one-off event, book 1-2 days before the big day so you hit that days 2-5 sweet spot. Most Soleil clients settle into an every-other-week rhythm, and our Tuesday through Saturday hours at Casady Square make it an easy 20-30 minute stop.
